The City of Anaheim is in the process of approving a plan for a power plant near the border of Yorba Linda, located at 3071 Miraloma Ave (near the corner of Miraloma and Kraemer). This is being defined as a “peaker plant” meaning as the electric load at any given time exceeds that which is available these types of plants would be utilized. Peaker plants typically run 200-500 per year. This facility is being licensed to run no more than 4,006 hours per year. A year has 8760 hours. This is a needed source of energy. But the technology being proposed for “clean” generation of power is not the best available. There will always be pollutants released with the generation of power but as these plants are built, should we not expect the technology used to be the “cleanest” available?
Why should we be concerned about this? Yorba Linda sits in a basin surrounded by the 91, 57 and 55 freeways; the railroad and super streets such as LaPalma and Imperial. Pollutants are a cummulative problem resulting in an increase in health issues particularly pulmonary problems (asthma, COPD exacerbation). We are up wind from this power plant and it will introduce additional pollutants over parts of Yorba Linda including our schools and parks.
We have submitted a formal request for a public hearing on the Canyon Power plant with the South Coast Air Quality Management District. The City has hired a consultant to assist in reducing the impact of this power plant on our community. Additionally, letters have been sent to the cities of Brea and Placentia indicating that we were filing a formal request for a public hearing advising them that if they want to participate in the filing or have any additional questions, they should contact our City Staff.
As this project progresses, reports will be made to the City Council for review and further direction to staff.
