Meet Jan

Dear Friends and Supporters,

My name is Jan Horton, councilwoman for the City of Yorba Linda. I ran because I care for Yorba Linda and I intend to preserve and protect the nature and character of the city we love.  I intend to put citizens FIRST and restore integrity and trust to our City Council.

I am a 22 year resident of Yorba Linda and have raised three children in this community. They attended Linda Vista Elementary, Yorba Linda Middle School and El Dorado High School. My husband Jim and I have been married 5 years. He has been a Yorba Linda resident for 28 years.

I have a BS in Occupational Therapy from the University of Illinois and received my certification in Hand Therapy 10 years ago. I currently work for St. Jude Continuing Rehabilitation Center as the supervisor of the Hand and Industrial Rehabilitation Program.

Professionally, I have held management level positions for many years. I have participated and founded multiple community support groups and professional education forums. I bring to the Yorba Linda City Council the ability to communicate well, solve problems, negotiate solutions, set goals, and organize and develop action plans to achieve these goals. I will treat individual citizens respectfully and be available to listen to their opinions.

I have watched as our city has become overdeveloped with increased traffic issues and increasing crime. Progress and growth are a certainty but progress must be planned and meet the priorities of the people who live here. Infrastructure must be addressed as we continue to grow. Our Town Center must have a plan that encourages the existing small business owners to succeed while adding amenities that our community would enjoy; i.e. restaurants, book store, Cultural Art Center, park space.

With your support we will make Yorba Linda the best place to live!

Jan Horton

WE ATTENDED THE “STAY AND DEFEND” MEETING LAST WEEK… AFTER THE MEETING WE SPOKE TO THE OCFA CHIEF; THE MAYOR; WILLIAM KELLY-CITY MGR; AND 3 OTHER COUNCIL MEMBERS REGARDING OPTIONS WHEN FACED WITH WILDLAND FIRES THAT THREATEN HOMEOWNERS IN YORBA LINDA. WE WERE ASKED IF COULD JOIN A JOINT MEETING WITH THE CITY, FIRE AUTHORITY & WATER DISTRICT. WE LOOK FORWARD WITH MEETING YOU AND SHARING OUR THOUTHS ON SOME OPTIONS ON THIS ISSUE. LOOKING TO MEETING YOU…

We appreciate your work on the Council and would like to continue to be involved in Yorba Linda’s future through the community meetings. We are concerned especially with maintaining our rural community feel with regard to preserving our hills at the east end of Yorba Linda. Because we are in the area affected by the November, 2008 wild fires, we are concerned about our community’s water issues, traffic, and need to control development so that we lose the reason many of us moved here in the first place. We’ve been here since 1985. Development of the Old Towne Center while maintaining the Old Towne feel–(so that we don’t wind up with what happened to Brea)–is also a priority. We do see a need for a balanced plan for Old Towne, and the need for a Peforming Arts Center. Thanks for keeping us informed through your newsletter and beyond, Jan.
