The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Yorba Linda is scheduled for August 5 @ 3 pm to August 6, 3 pm at the Yorba Linda Middle School, 4777 Casa Loma Ave.
The Relay for Life is a life changing event which brings people together to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and empower individuals and communities to fight back against a disease that takes too much.

As a community, we have been extraordinary in our support of this event. Please consider forming a team, joining an existing team or donating to the cause.

The following pictures are from the Yorba Linda Relay for Life Kick Off Dinner, held at the Nixon Library on March 3, 2011.

The 2010 Girls Scout 98th Birthday and Pat Nixon Birthday celebration was held at the Richard Nixon Library today in Yorba Linda! The theme of this years event was: Girl Scouts Go Green: Celebrating 98 years of Girl scouting and the Hope of a Greener Future.

In honor of Pat Nixon’s Birthday, wreaths were laid on her  grave site  and that of President Richard Nixon by the Yorba Linda Girl Scout Color Guard. The ceremony was a dignified tribute to the First Lady.

“Going Green” booths were scattered throughout the library grounds and the girls were given hands-on opportunities to learn about conservation, organic farming, recycling, alternative green cleaning products that are better for our environment, etc while earning badges. A fun day for all!

Everyone is invited to a “Birthday Party” in the East Room of the Nixon Library on Saturday, March 27^th, 2010 from 10:30 AM until Noon.   Refreshments will be served and information regarding the Yorba Linda Relay for Life, scheduled for August 13^th and 14^th will be discussed.  The overall Chairs for this year’s Relay are Alice Gorman and Gerry Stacy, both are St. Martin’s Parishioners.  The Library is offering ½ price admission to anyone attending our event..  The Library will remain open until 5PM.

We need everyone’s support in the Cancer Battle and if you’ve ever known anyone who has had cancer, this is your opportunity to do something.  The American Cancer Society provides services to cancer patients on a daily basis, information to the public, research dollars to support better diagnostics and treatment.  Please help us make this the best Relay to date.  Stand up and participate in this year’s RELAY.    Questions? The Second Annual Women’s Conference is on Saturday, March 27, 2010 and the keynote speaker is Lisa Ling. Lisa is probably best known for her roles as former co-host of The View television show, current host of National Geographic Explorer and special correspondent for The Oprah Winfrey Show, which has featured many of Ling’s investigative pieces, including a report on North Korea. This year’s breakout seminars offer women a variety of topics from strategizing for your retirement, to stress management, to a woman’s guide to nutrition. I want to thank Ed Royce for continuing to host this event! I was able to attend the conference last year and it is definitely worth the time spent addressing issues concerning women.

This two- story Craftsman- style home is located at 4801 Park Ave on the corner of Park Ave and Lemon. It has been the discussion of many a Council meeting for the past 5-6 years, after the home was vacated and allowed to deteriorate. The home listed as a City Historic resource in 1981, is currently uninhabitable.

The home, built in 1918, was inhabited by some of our earliest settlers, the  Trueblood’s and the Janeway’s.

Mr. Trueblood had the distinction of being the first passenger to ride the Pacific Railroad from Pillsbury, a town now abandoned, to Yorba Linda. Mrs. Ada Trueblood enjoyed writing and chronicled events occurring in the area at that time. Mrs. Trueblood was active in the community and was one of the charter members of the Yorba Linda Women’s Club. Three members of this family were charter members of the Yorba Linda Friends Church.

The Mr. and Mrs. Luther Janeway operated a grocery store on Main Street. Their daughter, Clara Mae Janeway Stephans, was one of the early Librarians of the Yorba Linda District Library. This family was also active in the Yorba Linda Friends Church.

There is documentation that Richard Nixon spent time on the property when he was a young boy.

The current owners expressed an interest to demolish the home and to replace it with a larger home that was out of scale for the surrounding neighborhood. The Planning Commission reviewed the plans and reduced the scale of the planned residence. This plan was still out of proportion for the surrounding area.

The Historic Society and other members of the community had hoped the home could be salvaged. After much deliberation, in an effort to save one of the last, true historic sites in our community, the City Council unanimously approved the purchase of the property and to “mothball” the structure protecting it from further deterioration. I did have reservations about this decision. The cost to purchase the property and mothball it is about $475,000. But given the historic nature of the building, I felt it was wise to give the community one last opportunity to raise the funds needed to preserve the home and determine a functional use for the property.  I supported this action with the caveat that no further City funds would be used to rehabilitate the home. As a sign of “good faith” I have requested the community group/ entity be required to raise 30% of the funds needed to rehabilitate the home within a year they are awarded the contract following an RFP. If this does not occur, the home will be demolished and another use will be determined for the site. This will be discussed at a Council meeting at the end of January or beginning of February.
